And, I'm trying to remember, but I think with TV shows and movies, I had to create an alias to access them with the Apple Remote. The only problem I have is with organization (there may be a way around this, and I honestly haven't taken the time to figure it out, but) all new files I purchase from the iTunes store are stored in the iTunes folder on my Mini hard drive, and I have to open the folder and drag them to the appropriate place on the external HDD. I don't know if you'll experience more lag with a 1TB drive than I do with 500GB, but I know I don't really have a choice, since my internal drive is only 120GB.
It's running through a Mac Mini Intel Core Duo with 2 gigs of RAM. I have my iTunes music and movies on a WB MyBook 500GB external hard drive. You'll just have music on the external drive. You won't get mysterious extra files on your internal drive. Namely, you will be sure all your files got moved, and if the disk is not attached, iTunes will simply complain when launched instead of silently using the old home folder location. Highly recommended: Make sure that the preferences for "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" in iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced are enabled. Navigate to the new copy of the library on the external drive, choose it
Launch iTunes while holding the Option key Move the original iTunes folder to the trash (don't empty yet) In iTunes, choose "Consolidate Library" from File -> Library -> Organize Library…įind the iTunes folder in the Music subfolder of your home folder. So once again, if anyone has done this I'd like to hear opinions to see if it is worth doing or not. There is also the issue of constantly moving new music from downloads to the external drive (which may be resolved by a program called hazel, still tinkering with it). Can anyone who does this or has tried it comment on any issues I might be bothered with? For starters, the external disk spinning up always stalls the entire system and I'm not sure how often it will do that if I'm listening to music all day. So my plan is to move my library to my WD Elements 1TB external and have access to my music whenever I'm connected to my sound system. I've been considering the new rMBP and am aware that I'll probably end up with the 256gb SSD and I don't want to be constricted on space right after transferring all my files over. I have about 130gb of music, I could slim it down a bit, but honestly I would like to keep a great majority of it because I'm a bit of an audiophile (and I actually have listened to all of it).
